Handball in Schools
[International Handball Federation - Handball At School]
Handball in schools is divided into 4 age groups.
3 – 6 years old : Baby Handball
At this age, the child is building their mechanical directory of basic motor skills: mobility, balance and manipulation, projection and object recovery. The construction of these actions takes place in stages. First acquired in their simplest form, then gradually enriched and diversified. Moreover, the child of that age feels the need to grow, to be independent and manifests the will to do it alone. The symbolic aspect is important. The child creates stories from objects and situations by investing them with meaning.
The content of the sessions must take into account of the specificity of this age:
- Concentration and limited attention,
- Construction Phase "I" (little or no capacity to play "with")
- Comprehensive bilateral motor skills (more or less developed), poorly controlled tone and an unstable equilibrium
6 – 8 years old : Step 1 Handball
During this stage of development, it is import to involve the parent in the child's sports development. It is imperative to create a dynamic environment in the club, laying the foundations of sustainability by combining early parents and club players who will be the leaders of tomorrow or coaches.
Practice in a club that is not recreation or daycare but an educational activity for children and socializing for the environment. Create a session tailored for energy, psychological and intellectual resources of the child.
There is a morphological difference between a 6 year old and 8 years old. The child must develop in a secure and safe space: Compatible balloons, small spaces. Children under 8 years old do not have the intellectual capacity to conceptualize our "Handball" language: attackers, defenders, target, area, they all mean nothing. These terms can be transformed into adventurers (forwards), rivers with crocodiles (zone), Thieves (defenders), jungle (playground), cave (cage) ... Involve the parents in the sessions, children often want to lead, it's a good way to give their notions of pedagogy.
8 – 11 years old : Mini Handball
Mini Handball is a very simplified version of its "big brother" Handball, making it more accessible for young athletes. Mini Handball contributes to the child's game development by not requiring complicated installations with simple rules. It still remains a complete sport, fun, adaptable, with children running, jumping, fighting, while developing a sense of cooperation, decision-making and accountability.
For the educator, Mini Handball can be played on many surfaces and can scale up to 6 teams at the same time on a conventional field. It is usually played 4 + 1 GK on the width of the field or on the basketball court with Mini Handball nets and Mini Handballs. Contact between players is strictly forbidden. Aims to take into consideration:
- To experience fun
- To train and advance the young players:
- emphasizing a game on small surfaces
- with goal area and adapted goals (cages or mini Hand reducers goal)
- according to appropriate rules (less strict and contactless)
- To facilitate the practice of many.
- To balance the playing field between the shooter and goalie.
> 11 years old : Handball
